obeyed as soon as practicable. I relieved
him of command at Harpers Ferry & ordered
him to report here. I then sent him back
to Harpers Ferry to assist in collecting and
reorganizing those of his troops who had arrived
then & who were to serve under Genl. Tyler.
The railroad communication being
interrupted he had to return from ________.
In the meantime I heard of a large
body of his men, who have turned up
in their retreat at Hancock had gone
up into Penn. I ordered him to proceed
by Harrisburg to Bedford to find & take
