Head Qrs. 12th Ohio Battery
Murfreesboro, Tenn.
Dec. 8th, 1864
M. T. Thomas
Col. 8th M. V. Comdg. Indpt. Brigade,
I have the
honor to respectfully report. I had ten pieces
of artillery, (our 12 pdr. Field Howitzer and 6 pdr. Smooth
Brim field gun) under command 2nd Lieut. Joseph
Billings of my battery, in the action of yesterday
the 7th inst. It took position on left of
Wilkinson Pike, and there engaged the enemy with
good effect, until ordered to retire, for want
of ammunition. I had one man wounded
in Head, at this place. No other accident or
casualties. I have no positive means of
knowing the exact amount of damage done to
the enemy, but judging from the close proxi-
mity, and shells exploded to his position, I
think his casualties must have been heavy.
The Section was soon after ordered to
the Fortress to get full supply of ammunition
and when returning to the field of action, was
ordered by Maj. Genl. Rousseau to its quarters.
I am Col., Very Respectfully
Your Obdt. Servt. Frank Jackson Capt.
Comdg. 2nd Ohio Indpt. Battery
