Hd. Qurs. 122nd O.V.I.
June 18th, 1863
Capt. J. E. Jacobs
A. A. G.
In obedience to orders received yesterday
evening, I beg leave most respectfully to
report that my regiment was held in reserve
on Saturday the 13th inst. at camp near Winches-
ter, Va. On Sunday morning, the 14th, the regiment
occupied a position south of the Romney road and
near the camp of the 123rd O.V.I. with companies A, D,
and E thrown forward as skirmishers
under Lt. Col. Granger. The skirmishers occupied
the crest of the hill till noon with frequent firing
between them and the skirmishers of the enemy.
At noon companies I, K, and a portion of B
relieved A and D and occupied the same position.
About 1 o’clock p.m. companies F and H under order
(Note 1) of Gen. Milroy moved to the south part of the
town of Winchester to prevent the occupation of
that part of town by the skirmishers of the enemy.
These companies were sharply engaged with the enemies
skirmishers, and were fired on occasionally from
private houses. About 5 o’clock p.m. by order of
(Note 2) Gen. Milroy the regiment and the skirmishers (I, K,
and a part of B) advanced. Lt. Col. Granger with
