Hol. Irs. 5 Tam Cav. Vol.
Tullahoma Tenn Oct 13, 1864
Major,
I have the honor of submitting the following
report of my scout. I was within about
6 miles of Fayetteville waiting the arrival of
the friends of those murdered soldiers, until
I received your order to go to Boones-hill.
I started immediately on the receipt of the
Order, but had not gone more than one mile
before I fell in with some Bushwackers, and
gave them a chase. I then moved on and cam-
ped about 5 or 6 miles from Boons-hill_ moving
the next morning at day-light, and when arrive-
ing within a short distance of the Hill, I met
a man, whom I know to be unconditionally
loyal, he told me that there were more Rebels
in that vicinity than I could contend with,
also other men sent messengers after me,
admonishing me to stop, here I will give the
names of the leaders of the squads Davis110 men,
Miers 100 men, Holbert 18 men, they had found
out that I was in the country, and said that
they would have me that day; so I thought
best to inform you of the facts.
So, I waited at Shelbyville until I was
reinforced by Wortham and Couch, and then
moved through that country again
