Baltimore July 18, 1863
To Major Genl. Schenck
Sir allow me to submit
to you the opinion of the Rebel prisoners confined
in Baltimore city jail the best informed of them all
state that General Lee’s force that crossed into
Maryland and Pennsylvania was composed of the
force Ewel at the lowest estimation of 30 to 3500
that was composed of infantry and artillery they also
state that Longstreet’s force that crossed the river
was from 45 to 50,000 strong composed of infantry and
artillery they also state that at P Hills force at the
lowest estimation numbered from 30 to 35,000 infantry
and artillery independent of this was Stewart’s Calvery
numbering 1800 strong they also state that Genl’
Milroy was attacked at Winchester by Hewel’s forces
of infantry and artillery 35,000 strong with Longstreet’s
forces in supporting distances the also state that Jenkins
calvary force crossed the Shanadoah River at Berryville and found
McRenolds retreating to Winchester they followed on close
to Winchester changed there course and struck for
Martinsburg to dispose of that post and gather up what
might escape from Winchester the also state Imboden
Calvary post number 1200 strong was intend to pick
up what might escape by the way of Romney and
Hancock Lee’s whole infantry force crossed
at front royal over by the way of Chester Gap and Thornton Gap
there is a great many willing to go north and take
the oath they state that the most artillery was
107 pieces at the battle of Gettesberg they also state
that they had but 10 rounds of annution left for
their artillery when they retreated from Gettesburg
they suffered greatly for bread while in Maryland
they had all the beef they wanted while in
Maryland and Pennsylvania they also state
