Head Quarters 25th Ohio Vol. Inf.
Brooks Station, Va., April 25th 1863
Maj. Genl. Milroy
Dear Sir:-
I embrace the opportunity
afforded by the mission of Col. Charlesworth to you, bearing
the testimonial of the officers and men of this regiment, to reassure
you of my own high regard, and of the continuance of my
regret at our separation from you. Under you we fought our
first battles, and from you we learned our first lessons of personal
heroism, which I hope we have never forgotten, either as a
regiment, or as individuals, and of which we believe you to be
the noblest example in the armies of the United States, I believe
I speak the sentiments of every officer and man in my regiment,
when I say that we have but one boon to ask of our government,
and that is, to again assign us to your command, but one
boast to make; and that is, with you for our leader, the enemies
of our country have cause to fear.
I have the honor to be,
Very respectfully,
Your obt. Servant
Wm. P. Richardson, Col.
