Head Quarters 2” Brigd. 3” Div. 3” Corps
Army of the Potomac, Aug. 21st” 1863
General,
I know you will pardon me for the
liberty – I take in addressing you, but I should
not be doing justice to my own feelings, nor
company with the wishes of my command
did I not do so. I know from my intercourse
with them that there is not an officer
or man who is not as much interested in the
trial now in progress at Washington as any
member of your own family, and any indignity
offered to your name or fame is just as keenly
resented. They long for the time when you shall
have justified your acts and again assumed
command of your old division. Was it not
for the restrictions military law places upon
officers in the Army, those who were under
you would vindicate your actions through
the press of the Country. We are here anxiously
waiting the decision of the court, but whatever
may be its verdict, they can never make
this command believe you was not performing
your duty as the bold and faithful officer. Their
love and admiration is too deep to be obliterated
by anything either that court or the copper-head
journals of the country-can accomplish. They
