My Dear Mary,
I am still here
but my prospect for being ordered.
duty is now very good. Colfax got
here on last Friday & I got him to
go & see Old Abe for me & he got
him (the Presd.) to promise to order me
to me to Gen. Butler for duty. He
said this was the best he could do &
he was very reluctant to consent to
do that without consulting Hallock,
but Colfax by some coaxing & plain talk
for him to consent to order me to duty
without consulting Hallock. This was a
pretty bold promise for Old Abe, & it
will probably make Hallock very wise
but Colfax thinks Old Abe will stick to
his promise & that I will get my order
in a day or two. I would rather serve
under General Butler than under any
other General, but he has not got many
troops and cannot give me much of
a command, but they may send more
troops there & an advanced be made on
