Winchester Jany. 3rd 1863
Lieut. Jno. O. Cravens
A.A.G. Cht. Mtn. Division
Sir,
The under
signed officers of the 1st Brigade Cht. Mtn.
Division would respectfully request that
the Gen. (Cluseret) now in command of the
Brigade should be relieved and would
assign the following reasons; Viz 1st. He
is a foreigner unable to speak our language
so as to be understood and he himself has
the same difficulty in understanding us,
hence our intercourse thus far has been nothing
but a perplexing series of mutual blunders
and mistakes. To specify in illustration;
he started from Moorefield about the 20th Dec.
-62 on an expedition designed against Strawsburg
and altho’ he had been at Moorefield more
than a week getting ready for the expedition
it appeared that he had not learned whether
the route intended was practicable or not; that
he started different regiments in different
directions without guides or instructions
as to the route to be taken, the consequence
(in side margin)
Colorado vs. Gen Cluseret
