Tullahoma Tenn.
Sept. 15. 1864
General.
From what I hear, you will soon
reorganize your armies to some extent.
If such should be the case, I respectfully
ask that I may not be overlooked. I think
I have done penance long enough in the rear
to atone for all the sins of myself and my ancestors.
The scattering R. R. guard I now command is
hardly a respectable command for a Brigadier. The
R..R is much safe within my command &
I am not much here.
General, I trust you will not consider me
importunate or captious. But having been
educated as a soldier& seen some service in
Mexico & since the beginning of the present war as
a soldier . What little reputation I have as
such is dear to me, & I have some pride of
character. My reputation has been blurred and
blackened. & my pride of character deeply wounded.
By a most unjust and causless arrest. such as not
the case with any other Maj. Gnl. in the
service. If you can give me a comd . In front
where I can have opportunity to wipe out too.
Some extent the stigma of that arrest you
will lay me under the deepest obligations.
I would freely wave any question of rank & take
