MR
Washington April 5th 1865
Maj. Gen. V. H. Milroy
Sir,
Your favor of the 31st untimo
informs me of the interest you feel
in the struggle of Mexico against
her invaders, as well as your desire
of taking a part in the work of her
salvation. I beg to acknowledge my
gratitude for such noble feelings in
behalf of my country, and shall be
very much pleased in corresponding
with you privately and freely, as you
suggest on this important subject.
You may confidently communicate
to me your practical views on the matter,
which, I am sure, will be greatly useful
and important.
