In answer to the circular
letter from the Adjutant Generals office
of the 7th ivst. I have the honor
to submit the following statement.
Having had a military education &
the experience of a years campaign
in Mexico during the war with that
country, I felt it was my duty at the
beginning of the present war to devote
every energy of mind & body to the salvation
of my country. Seeing from the persistent
madness of the political leaders of the South,
and the secession of South Carolina followed
by the other cotton states that war was inev
itable. I on this 7th of Feb. 1861 issued a
Handwritten; 3 sheets, double-folded, 12 sides of writing; white stationery
