My Dear Mary,
I returned back
to this city on Monday last from
a visit to Cumberland Md. where
I had went in obedience to a summons
as a witness before a Court Martial
and found your letter here of the 25th
and 26th ult. You are distressed
about not getting letters from me.
I cannot account for you not
receiving my letters, for I seldom
let a week pass without writing
to you. Life is so gloomy and
monotinous here that I have
nothing of interest to write to you
about. The events of congress and city
life are so insipid and devoid of
interest & so different from the
stiring event of Camp life, that
there seems to be nothing to interest
or write to you about, and after I tell
you I am well it would pain you as
it does me to say that I am still idle
on the shelf, not on duty, doing nothing for
my country.
Handwritten; 2 sheets double folded, 8 sides of writing; ink on white stationery with light blue lines
