With deep feelings of
gratitude I thank you & through you the
generous & patriotic citizins of Rensselaer &
vicinity who have through you present me
this noble war horse. Coming to me as he does,
a gift from old neighbors & friends who
have known me for a long course of years,
invests him with peculiar interest & value.
Notwithstanding the very flattering expressions of confidence & respect that
they through you have so flatteringly expressed for
me, yet I have not the vanity to believe
suppose for a moment that this fine horse
comes to me as a tribute to any private worth
or merit that I may possess, but he comes to me
& I receive him as Colonel of the 9th Ind.
Vols. as a gift to the military head of this
splendid Regiment of patriotic soldiers who
I have the proud honor to comand & who
as well as to myself have with alacrity respond=
ed to the call of our country & are ready to
pour out their harts blood in defense of her
rights. I feel assured that this war horse
is presented to me by my friends & neighbors.
