Head Quarters 1st Brigade
Milroy’s Division
January 6 – 1863
General-
I think we might send
out a reconnaissance of say 100 cavalry
in nearly that number, 100 or 150 volunteers
taken from the best warriors and
your private guard, the whole under
the command of the Lt. Col. Schickfass.
the infantry being commanded besides
by 2 captains and 2 lieutenants also
volunteers.
The men should take with them
two days rations and their blankets
and cmd. will approach as near as
possible, the troops attacking Moorefield
without compromising themselves
and assessing correctly their po-
sition and force.
Lt. Col. Schickfass has been 12
years in service and ought to be
able to direct the expedition.
