My dear friend:
You will pardon
me for troubling you with a short letter
occasionally. I am aware that a man
occupying the position that you do, must
necessarily have a very large correspondence
and to answer all would keep your quill in
constant motion; hence I shall not feel
at all slighted if I do not get an immediate
answer to this or any other friendly communication
which I may send you.
My health has been ver poor since we left
Winchester Va although I performed military
duty until after the famous retreat of the
Potomac Army (in Oct last) from the Rapidan
to Centerville during which I broke down,
had a run of the fever, was unconscious of my
whereabouts for fifteen days, and when I
became rational, found myself in Seimary
Hospital at Georgetown D.C. was examined
By military board and discharge the service
on accts. of Physical disability—Since which
time I have so far recovered my health, that
I begin to think that I might endure the service
