Maj. Genl. Milroy,
I have the honor to state to you that this morning
I invited at the request of my wife, old Dr. Hart (the father
of our much esteemed Suergeon Genl. Hospitol) to visit my house.
During his visit some plot or conspiracy was entered into and
carried into effect the result of which is that I am
required to maintain and support a Juvenile Youth
who will here after be known by the name of Robert Milroy
Davidson. I hope you will pardon us for taking this free
privilege with your name and pardon me for the freedom
of addressing you this note. You can appreciate the
feelings of a father on such occasions. If, in after
years Robert Milroy Davidson becomes a great man perhaps
your grey hairs will be in the grave. if so you can look
down from a more blessed and happier state of existence than
this with the consciousnefs that his greatness is not inher-
=ited from his father but from the illustrious given name
be bears. Please accept this token (for want of a more
substantial) of my gratitude for your good services in
behalf of my unfortunate State. (Tennessee) Greatfully
