General
The enclosed letter is respectfully forwarded
for the information & such action as may be thought propper of the Maj Gnl
comdg dist Dept Cumberland. The
cases referred to in of destitution mentioned
in the letter are only a few among the
thousands of destitute families of union
soldiers all over the state especially colored soldiers. It is difficult
to immagine the misery of the poor soldier
absent from his family when knowing
with certainty that they are suffering for
the absolute necessaries of life. The families
of soldiers in the disloyal states are in
every respect in a hundred fold worse
condition than those in the loyal states, for
besides the destitution occasioned by
the ravages of war & the want of united
simpathy there are none of those aid
societies & approprations by country &
states so universal in all the states
of the North. I would therefore respectf-
ully suggest that authority be granted to post
