Dear General,
I am sorry — very sorry -
that I have so little gratfied for
after all, in obtaining you an assignment
to duty. You can scarcely imagine
how discouraging it is to one in public
life, after working so hard and so long, to find
that he has not after all satisfied. The
friend for whom he has labored.
Halleck, you know, is opposed to your
being in service at all. Grant appears
so, why I cannot imagine. But I know
