United States of America
(stricken: Washington City 186)
South Bend, IN. Aug 9. 1864
My dear fr.
An ungrateful scamp, named G.M. Davis
of Mich. City, who you may remember seeing at
Washn last Nov. for whom I attained an appt. for
Tremont, which he finally lost, and paid me in ingratitude
and falsehood, is abusing me at M. City because I didn’t
drop everything and file some charges he had agst a Q. M.
but which he said you filed for him afterwards.
I believe you were in my room when he came at me. It
was just before the organization of the Honor? when being a
candidate for speaker I was filled at all hours of the
day with meetings and other visitors and I could not leave it. I had heard of his abuse of me
fr one or two years previously: and that he had been abusing
me ever since he reached Washington; but I told him that
as I could not leave my rooms then to attend to any business
at Department. I would after the organization was over look
into the business he wanted me to present, as I would for all
others; but could not till then be enemies or friends.
I thought if you remembered this, as he uses your name
as one who did file his papers for him when he says I would not you
might write me a brief note on the subject to use if necessary.
