I received your ample letter on the
10th inst. It relieved my mind of the weight of
anxiety. I am a constant reader of the Cin. Gazette
as well as other papers. The Gazette I buy every day,
I saw the NY Heralds correspondents article as
well as the editors brutal remarks. Fit to come from
such a paper, whose editor and proprietor Bennet has
made his fortune by blackening the characters of his
superior and by every base means his satanic brain
could conceive. Two cowardly himself to resent
many public floggings he has received from
cowhides and canes, or the terrible scathing he got from
Roger A Pryor on the floor of Congress. In no
other country would such scandalous
paper be tolerated, and there are too many such in
this country. I also saw the extracts from
Richmond papers concerning you, particularly
the Richmond Sentinel’s mild suggestion that you
and Ella should be sent to the penitentiary for
your alleged doings at Winchester. I thank God
my dear sister that you, Ella nor Robert fall into
their hands. They would have heaped every indignity
upon you, as for their charges against you I
