Yours of the 21st ult.
was recd today together with a large
number of other letters & papers, being
the first mail that I have recd.
for ten days,- all trains having been
stoped by the forrest raid, which I
suppose is now over as far as my R.R.
is concerned. Forrest caused a tremendous
commotion along the R.R. lines south
of Nashville. I have had those Maj.
Generals and two Brig here in one day. That was
yesterday. Maj. Genl. Thomas, Maj. Genl.
Rousseau & Maj. Genl. Stedman and
myself making four double stared
Genls.& Brig Generals Johnson & Croxson.
Forrest is & has ruined the R.R.
from Nashville to Decatur. He struck
it at Athens 15 miles North of Decatur &
destroyed it effectively nearly 28 miles to near
Pulaski. Capturing in all about 1200 of our men
& a 1000 horses & six pieces of artillery.
Handwritten; 1 sheet, double folded, 4 sides of writing; white stationery with light blue lines
