My Dear Mary 
 
 
                           Yours of the of the 24th 25th 
& 26th ult. is recd, enclosing letter from Ella 
which I think I have not befoe  acknowled- 
ged.  I have also recd yours of the 3rd inst. 
enclosing the letter of Merrill & Co.  I am glad 
you got Dan Davis to attend to that job, 
instead of myself, for writing is disagreeable 
hard work for me.  I attempted to write a 
sketch of my life & campaigns, but have 
got so tired of it that I have quit it.  I 
commenced it for Mr. Hurlburt, or rather 
to furnish him materials from which to 
make out his sketch biographics, that 
he wants of me.  But I have come to the 
comfortable conclusion that I would send 
you what I have written, and have you refer 
it with all the letters that I have written you 
concerning my battles, marches, skirmishes 
hard times etc. to him & let him pick out 
from them what material he desires for his
