My dear general-  
 
 
 
	 Yours of the  3rd mailed me  
only a day or two ago- some days after  
I  had mailed the sum of my                ,  
it is perhaps quite as well, for the reason  
that it would  probably have been of no  
avail for me to have urged the measures  
you propose. 
 
 
 
	You are undoubtedly correct in your views, 
 & there can be nothing more certain than that much  
a man as your purpose, made with a form 
of 30,000 men, & timed so as to be  
cordinated with the movements of the army  
of the Potomac, could be productive of any  
important insults. 
 
 
 
I  believe  that I can do nothing to aid 
you- I will continue to communicate 
 the  balance of your letter to Burnside, with 
The hope that he will take it up. If  unsure 
 I will do so in such a manner as not to 
 compromise the confidential nature of  
your letter.
