Your kind letter
of the 17th inst is recd. There is no one
whose memory I cherish with more
melancholy pleasure or profound respect
than that of my dear friend & command in
arms Wm. E. Pearsons. His name “brings
the light of other days around me” and it

connected with him. I am sorry that I am
not able to give you a “word from the front”
directly for my command is not in the
Extrean front where I would very much
prefer that it should be. But though I
am not directly in Extrean front at present
yet I am in daily intercourse with who are
from “the midst of battles & bullets” and
am acquainted with their feelings, sentim-
ents and desires ( of the soldiers of our comm.)
and I can assure you
