To show how plainly Halleck villianry sticks out in packing a  
Court to try me, he took three Brigadeers & inferiors in rank from active  
duty  to compose the Court while there are 16 Maj. Genls. laying around 
idle  & without any command from whom he could have taken three to make a  
	legal court

My Dear Mary,

 
		I recd. yours of the 6th 
inst. two days ago. It is pleasing to me 
to learn that you & the children are in  
good health. I am still in good health, 
I have been here over a week & the Court 
of Inquiry to examine my conduct relative to  
the evacuation of Winchester met on last  
Friday a week ago, but have not yet  
commenced examining my case, for the 
reason that Halleck has been trying to  
fix up a court that will shield him from  
all blame & report against Gen. Schenck 
& myself. Gen. Hitchcock the only Maj. Gen.  
on the Court as it first constituted, though a 
West Pointer, is known to be a high minded 
honest old man & refused to lend himself to  
Hallecks purposes & was relieved from the  
Court & a new West Point Brigadeer who 
had for a long time been a member of Hallecks 
 staff.
