Enclosed I send you a
(stricken: little) copy of a letter I have rec’d from a
Sergt Griffith of the 5th Tenn. Cav. For
publication if you think best. It will
serve to show to some extent the miserable
conditions of the poor loyal Tennessee soldiers
families all over the state & may serve to stir up some effort
for their relief. Under existing orders there
can be no rations or other relief extended by
Govt. to wives & children of soldiers or other
citizens whatever may be their condition. I
believe there are no soldier aid societies in this state as in the loyal states for
the relief & support of soldiers families.
Such societies should be everywhere formed.
I am personally acquainted with Sergt.
Griffith & know his statement to be true. I know
a number of families of soldiers at & in the vicinity
of this post in very destitute circumstances & are only
kept from starvation (stricken: from ) by a pitance rec’d
from the poor fund & charity. I have
