Sir, I have ever since I left Winchester thought of
of writing you; not because of any special acquaintance
with you, but because, with thousands of other
west Virginians I have admired you as a good General
a safe Commander yet a bold and dauntlys soldier
I should never have taken this liberty with you
in this writing but for the efforts of some
to crush one, whose praises they envied, but who
had not the courage to earn it for themselves.
And here sir, I must be permitted to congratulate
you, in your successful and triumphant
vindication of yourself against the changes so
groundlessly and (I would say) malishously brought
against you. I resigned my position in the
9th Va. Regt. and left Winchester the 22nd day of
march last- came home and found that my
wife had presented us a fine boy but 4 days before
and you need not be surprised (if ever you should
com to Pt. Pleasant) a good looking boy bearing your own
