All right about the trees – make any improvements you
think best but I would prefer a two story fronting town.
The mountains are covered with snow here yet.

My Dear Mary,
Having got leave of
Gen. Fremont on last Monday night
I immediately ordered the larger portion
of my Regiment together with Hymans
battery to come on here on Tuesday Morning
& left the reble fortifications at Alligany
summit about ten o’clock the 8th inst.
& arrived here about one o’clock same day
with my staff except Cravens & Beard who
I sent here the day before, & a company
of Cavalry. My scouts have been fighting
everyday since I arrived here with those
of the rebles. None of my men have been
killed yet- a few slightly wounded & one
Cavalryman severly wounded- until yesterday
when the rebles came over in force to
wipe us out. My pickets were out
about 4 miles & the rebles attacked them
in such force that they fell back
slowly & the officer in command sent
back a courier to me informing of it and
asking assistence – I immediately sent
out six companies from differenct Regts.
