Head Quarters Milroys Brigade
Near Woodville Rappahannock Co. Va,
July 14th 1862
My Dear Mary,
You don’t know how much I
am disappointed and vexed on not receiving a
letter from you. I wrote you last from
Strasburg on the 4th was there pained at not
receiving a letter from you, but have been
disappointed from day ever since & have
still not recd. a word from you. What
does does this long and painful silence mean?
If anything distressing has happened, let me
know the worst, don’t keep me in this
painful suspense. I don’t get the Rensselaer
Gazette either, though I directed it to be sent
to me regularly. I have not recd. a number
of it for a month. I received the “Indianapolis
Journal” regularly & got letters from other
parts of Ind. Why is it that nothing comes
from Rensselaer? This silence seems painfully
ominous of bad tidings. It may be the fault
of our mails but I fear it is not. I left Strasburg
on the 5th & moved down to Middletown, left
there next morning in the direction of Front
Royal & camped at a very large spring on the
Handwritten; 4 pages, double folded on white stationer with light blue lines
