              Headquarters Cheat Mt District USA 
                             Monterey April 19. 1862 
     Colonel: 
             I would return to yourself & the officers of your Regiment 
my acknowledgements of the receipt of your complimentary letter 
of the 11th inst.  In using my utmost efforts to collect your scattered 
Regiment I (stricken: was induced_ did but (stricken: justice) a favor to myself and (stricken: the reputation)  
(stricken: service) justice to the service – being induced to these efforts by the favorable representation 
of the friends of the Regiment as to (stricken: the its effect) fine material of which 
it was composed.  I do but justice to the gallant men under your 
charge in saying that these representations have proved wholly 
correct & that I expect from them glorious deeds of bravery 
& daring in support of the constitution & Flag of (stricken: this) our 
common country.
