On the Va. side of the Potomic
Opposite Washington City D.C. Sept. 28th 1862
My Dear Mary
My connection with the “army
of the Potomic” (stricken: is about to cease) is about to
cease & that forever I hope, as you will
probably have learned from the papers that I am
ordered to Western Va. again. Since I left there
that portion of the state has been nearly all
overrun by the rebles & will all have to be fought
over again. I have fought through the state
of Va. once from the Ohio to the Potomic
& was a little over 14 months making the
trip. oand must now go back the Ohio
& begin again. This time I am ordered to
commence lower down on the Ohio at the
mouth of the Kanawha. It is a vast
undertaking & I dread the terrible respnsib=
ility. A deep sense of duty to my Country
alone nerves me to the dreaded task. Your
are aware that there has been a great
scarcity of salt among the rebles through=
out the whole South during the last year,
