My Dear Mary,
I recd. yours of the 29th
inst. & am much pleased to hear that
the children are getting over the measles
so finely. It is much the best that they have
them while young & at home, as they will
now be out of all danger from them through
life. My poor boys of the 9th are suffering
terribly from them, about 300 of them are
down with them last week. 13 had died
& some four or five more expected to die the
last I heard from them. It is very unfor-
tunate for them that they left Cht. Mtn. Sumt.
At the time they were taking them, as the
change of climate & exposure in coming
down out of that region has caused the
measles in many cases to turn to the black
measles & past medical remedies. They are
still at Feterman & I hope they will be
permitted to remain there till they get better.
For near half the Regiment are now unfit
for duty on account of measles, mumps, etc.
but they are getting better.
