The Earthquake of 1811
Come all ye sons of Adam
And likewise ye daughters, too,
And I'll rehearse the dangers
The Lord has brought us through.
The 16th of December and 17th likewise
There was a dreadful earthquake,
Which did us all surprise.
In the year of 1811, as appears
Those days that I have mentioned,
It was a time of tears,
A time of grief and sorrow
To each and every one,
But those who were in favor
Of God's Eternal Son.
It shook the earth's foundation,
Perhaps, from pole to pole,
Which made us all tremble
And think of our poor souls:
And how we with Jesus,
If we had then been called
Before the great Tribunal
Where we must stand or fall.
Now don't forget the earthquake,
And how did feel we all
To see the globe a-tottering,
It to and fro did reel;
It opened in wide chasms;
Threw up great banks of sand;
Great quantities of water
Gushed out upon the land.
Oh! is is not most dreadful
And horrid for to think
Had we been called to Judgement
Sporting on the brink
Of overlasting ruin,
That leads to death and hell,
In endless pain and misery
Forever more to dwell.
