MRS. ELSIE TROUT
331 E. MAPLE ST.
JEFFERSONVILLE, INDIANA
DEAR MRS. TROUT:
ENCLOSED YOU WILL FIND TWO COPIES OF THE LAST ISSUE OF THE SPEEDOMETER IN WHICH I TRIED TO PAY TRIBUTE TO THE MEMORY OF ART. LIKE ANY GOOD SOLDIER, ART WAS ASXIOUS TO PROVE HIMSELF WORTHY OF A REAL PLACE OF ACTION IN OUR ARMED FORCES, AND YOU KNOW WELL HOW HAPPY HE WAS WHEN, AFTER MANY ATTEMPTS AND A LOT OF LONG HARD WORK, HE WAS ABLE TO WEAR HIS AIR CORPS WINGS.
WAR IS AN AWFUL THING WITH SEPARATION AND DEATH THE INEVITABLE RESULTS. BUT I AM SURE THAT ART WOULD SOONER HAVE MET HIS FATE IN THE WAY HE DID THAN IN ANY OTHER, SO YOU HAVE THE CONSOLATION OF KNOWING THAT THOUGH HIS LIFE WAS SHORT HE WAS ABLE TO DO THAT WHICH MEANT SO MUCH TO HIM.
DURING THE WAR I TRIED TO SERVE AS A LINK BETWEEN THE BOYS AND THEIR HOME COMMUNITY, AND I PRIZE VERY MUCH THE SEVERAL LETTERS I RECEIVED FROM ART DURING THE TIME HE WAS IN THE SERVICE, ESPECIALLY THE ONE HE WROTE ME ON THE DAY BEFORE HIS LAST MISSION.
IF I CAN BE OF ANY HELP TO YOU IN FILING PAPERS FOR ARTS INSURANCE, OR IN ANY OTHER WAY, I WILL BE HAPPY TO DO SO. IF YOU WOULD LIKE ADDITIONAL COPIES OF THE SPEEDOMETER, I WILL BE GLAD TO SEND THEM TO YOU.
BE SURE YOU HAVE MY SYMPATHETIC INTEREST IN THIS TIME OF SORROW.
SINCERELY,
JESSE G. DORSEY
