Sesquicentennial

The Greentown Sesqui-centennial
Executive Committee
has determined that seven
committees are needed to
p r o d u c e , a FABULOUS
celebration in June 1998. After
several mont hs of brainstorming
and research, the executive
committee states that it is time to
" sound the bugle and rally the
community.'' The members of the
committee don't want to keep all
the fun to themselves. Following
are committee titles and
suggested sub- committees
under each.
REVENUE
Sell buttons, coins, Plates,
S I clothing, novelties & Souvenirs*
HISTORICAL PLAY
Scenario & . title, sound, casting,
costumes, tickets, ushers,
gatekeepers, grounds.
COMMEMORATIVE HI STORY
BOOK
Gather material, write book, sell
ads, book sales, family histories.
Children's coloring book. Honor
local citizen's accomplishments.
PUBLICITY
Radio, TV, Newspaper, give out ~ releases, visit other places
enter other parades, bumper
, s t i c k e r s , c o s t u m e s ,
photography, maps and signs.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Golf tourney, croquet tourney,
horseshoe tourney, queen
c o n t e s t , band c o n c e r t ,
children's events, parade
entries, pet parade, community
church service, honor oldest &
youngest citizen, women's nail
driving contest.
DISPLAYS
Indian village, historical re-enactors,
c r a f t booths,
historical displays, window
displays, art show, essay
contest, quilt show, antique
tractors .
GROUNDS
Traffic, safety, clean- up, port-a-
pots,. first aid.
A secretary is also sought to
keep minutes of general
meetings. Other ideas may be
added and all the above may not
be possible, but the committee
believes this outline would make
a memorable event and give
room for all who wish to be
involved. PLEASE contact one of
the members of the executive
committee NOW and indicate
your area of interest. The
committee is Bonnie Bonebrake,
Darwin Freeman, Rachel
Jenkins, and Craig Trott.
The w i n n e r of t h e
sesquicentennial logo contest
has not yet been determined.
The s e s q u i c e n t e n n i a l
committee is seeking movies of
the Greentown Centennial which
was held in 1948. If some can be
located and put together into a
video, many people could enjoy
it during the sesquicenten_ nial.
Howard County 4- H Fair Chairman Bob Kirkpatrick and Fair
Queen Karen Dunlap exhibit the spirit of fun enjoyed by a record
or near- recordcrowd at this year's fair which was July 22- 27.
Since a gate fee is not charged, it is not possible to have firm
attendance figures, but fair officials estimate 220,000 people
participated in many aspectsof the fair. This was the 51st year
for the Greentown Lions Club to sponsor the fair, billed as " the
sixth largest special event in the state of Indiana."

Town Prohibited from
Annexing West of the
Reservoir
As was explained at the July 2
Greentown' Town Council
meeting, a state law prevents
towns from annexing land unless
1/ 8 of the proposed annexation
is attached to the town. This law
is standing in the way of the
Town of Greentown annexing a
proposed subdivision northwest
of the US 35/ SR 22 bridge at the
west edge- of town.
Doug Gooch of Kokomo and
others are planning to turn
about 25 acres into 22- 23
building lots. They first sought
annexation and water and
sewage service from the town of

mentioned strip were in the
town limits, annexation would
not be assured since homes in
Greenhills are not in the town.
Mr. Gooch then asked if water
and sewage service could be
obtained without annexation. It
has been the position of the
Council not to provide utilities
without annexation. Council
member, Don Flook, relayed that
Kokomo sometimes provides
water and sewage to un-annexed
property with an
agreement that they will
automatically be annexed when
it becomes possible. The Council
delayed action on the second
request pending further study
of the matter.
Gooch will be going before the
Howard County Plan Commission
in August to seek approval for
developing building lots.

To Keep Third
Police Car
The Greentown Town Council,
at their meeting July 2, voted to
keep the older police car after
weighing its value to the town
against the trade- in value.
Budget Meeting
Date- s - Set
Two public meetings have
been announced during which
the Town budget will be
presented. On August 15 at 7: OO
p. m. in the Town Meeting Room,
the proposed budget will be
read, with adoption planned for
the same time and place on '
August 22.
Recycling Bins
Ordered
Approval was given by the
Town Council for the purchase
of 100 recycling bins at a cost of
