The Greentown Volume 4, Issue 3 s 66a paper for the people" March 1997 NEW MASCOT INTRODUCED The new Eastern Comet mascot is brought to life by sophomore Luke Cheek. The Eastern Booster Club, sponsor of the mascot, plans to have him present at all spring sporting events. The mascot has not been officially named. So far as. can be determined, Eastern has only had one other " live" mascot. In 1980 Stacy Burget donned a large yellow " head" and became " Cornet- Chicken". Others to wear that costume were Ella and Leslie Speidel. Ella was particularly proud to wear the costume in 1984, the year her brother David was on the varsity basketball team. Ella is inside the chicken costume to the right. Council Approves Use of Stre- ets The Greentown Town Council, at its meeting February 4, heard a request from Jane Porter, Co- Chairman of the Greentown Glass Festival, for use of streets for this year's festival. She requested Meridian St. between Walnut and the railroad, one half block between Main St. and Walnut St. on Howard St., and one half block between Meridian and Green on Walnut. The council approved the use of Meridian St. and Howard St. as requested but denied the use o Walnut St. because it is a mail street through town, traffic ha: to be routed down that stree during the parade, and it need: to be left open for firc protection. President Robert Armstronl announced the appointment 0: Tony Nelson to the Plar Commission to fill the positior vacated by the resignation o Donal Butler. Nelson's term wil last through Dec. 31,1999. Commission Accepts Annexation Proposal At a special public meeting of concerns about expected traffic the Greentown Plan Commission, and noise accompanying such a a voluntary annexation was business. Mr. Carter stated approved. The meeting, that they would like to see the February 19, concerned the area kept residential. Each of the thirteen. 4th: 5th and 6th grade class held a spelling bee in their room to arrive at a winner and alternate to represent their room in the school contest. Other contestants in the February 20 event were 4th graders Jennifer Hutchinson, Brad Dean, Deborah Kady, Michelle Bulin, and Kelly Trott. In 5th grade - were Ann Bedwell: Michael Murphy, and Matthew Coleman. Sixth grade spellers were Drew Reed, Melissa Thomas and Nick Barrett. Alternates from individual classes were Joy Echelbarger, Tony Martin, Stephanie Dunn, Justin Rash, Sunny Jewel& Kacee Bauer, Katie Zook, Zach Manton, Matthew Maher, Christy Zook, Blake m k , Becky Boltz, and Matt Slusher. Miss Walker is eligible to compete in the Kokomo Tribune Regional Spelling Bee which will be March 31 at Indiana University Kokomo. Miss Houser is the alternate.
