Volume 5, Issue 5 46ap aper for the people" May 1998
On April 14, 1998, on the 150th
anniversary of the recording of the
original plat of Greentown, all of
Eastern's third, seventh, and eighth
grade students, as well as members of
the Greentown community, traveled to
the Howard County Courthouse to
reenact the signing of the plat. The
middle school band played and flags
waved as three men, selected for their
family connections to the founders,
walked to the fiont entrance of the
Court House and signed a parchment
replica of the original record. More than
one person said they got goose bumps
when the men came up the walk.
In the photo to the right, Jim Shrock
signs for Charles 0. Fry. In the middle
is Tom Harper, waiting to sign for Jesse
Osbom. On the left is Rick Seagrave,
who signed for his direct ancestor,
Tarver Seagrave. Harper's wife Shirley
is a descendant of Osbom. Shock is
descended h m Freys which may or
may not be fiom Charles 0. Fry. Beryl
J. Grimme, Counly Surveyor, also
signed the parchment, because the
original was signed by Austin C. Sheets,
Surveyor in 1848.
It is expected that the parchment will
be fiamed and given to the Town of
Greentown.
