it's enough to make things float,
sometimes not. Archimedes, a brilliant
mathematician who lived in Greece
( 287- 212 BC) defined the principle in
much more scholarly terms. It was
proven in a dramatic way on the evening
of Friday, May 2 1 , when an empty
underground gasoline tank rose through
the concrete at the former Jacob's East
End Station. The underground water
had forced the large metal tank upward.
The Indiana Department of
Environmental Management ( IDEM)
was called, and within a few hours

with the Emergency Response Section,
was on the scene. It was determined

between IDEM, the property- owners,
Don and Mary Helen Jacobs, and the
owner of the tanks; Central Oil of
Indiana. In the meantime, the area was
secured and the two tanks removed fiom
the property.
Mr. Cage continued to work with the
owners on devising the best plan for
cleanup. What had begun
spontaneously ( remember - buoyancy)
must now be completed. As of Monday
evening, May 24, an agreement was
being drawn up between Central Oil of
Indiana and Jim Allen to clean the site.
