Archimedes, a brilliant mathematician who lived in Greece ( 287- 212 BC) defined the principle in much more scholarly terms. It was proven in a dramatic way on the evening of Friday, May 2 1 , when an empty underground gasoline tank rose through the concrete at the former Jacob's East End Station. The underground water had forced the large metal tank upward. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management ( IDEM) was called, and within a few hours David Cage, environmental scientist with the Emergency Response Section, was on the scene. It was determined Later Saturday afternoon the empty tank, as well as one beside it, were removed from the ground upon order of the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. Photos by R Jenkins that the tank, the uppermost part of which was now about four feet above ground, would be removed as soon as possible. Cage called for Jim Allen. Maintenance to remove it and one lying next to it. Conversations were begun between IDEM, the property- owners, Don and Mary Helen Jacobs, and the owner of the tanks; Central Oil of Indiana. In the meantime, the area was secured and the two tanks removed fiom the property. Mr. Cage continued to work with the owners on devising the best plan for cleanup. What had begun spontaneously ( remember - buoyancy) must now be completed. As of Monday evening, May 24, an agreement was being drawn up between Central Oil of Indiana and Jim Allen to clean the site.
