Changes in Elementaw
Handbook Pasel
The Eastern School Board approved '
the elementary student handbook, which
includes a few changes.
A change in dismissal procedure is:
Parents who bring or pick up their
children should do so by entering the
west drive off of Walnut Street and
should exit the east drive to Walnut
Street. Students who wdk home will be
escorted to the Meridzan Street exit by
a supervisor.
A change regarding visitors is: In
cases where parents are divorced, it is
the responsibility of the custodial
parent to supply a copy of court
documents stating that non- custodial
parents are prohibited from school
visitations, if the cumdial parent does
not want the noncustodial parent to
visit their child at school.
An addition is: A pay telephone will
be available in the front lobby for ajer
hours student use.
On rules about clothing: Spaghetti
strap tops and tank tops will be
prohibited.
In the string orchestra: Advanced
students will meet two to three times a
week at - 7: 15 a. m. Extra curricular
performances may also occur
throughout. the school year.
Odyssey of the Mind has been
renamed: Destination Imagination.
The complete student handbook can
be seen at the school or the corporation
office. Copies will also be distributed
at registration.
Hew Band Director
Hired for EHS
Peter Sampson was hired as Eastern
High Band Director on July 7. He has
been at Eastern the past school year as
assistant'to Don Walker. Walker has
resigned to take a position in the
Denver, Colorado area. Interviews are
being conducted for the position of
Assistant Band Director.
Rebecca Willis was hired on a limited
license to teach Spanish at the Jr/ Sr
High School. She is licensed in
language arts and is working on her
endorsement in Spanish.
Libby Working, first grade teacher,
requested and received a maternity leave
for the 2000- 200 1 school year.
Come to the Fair
Greentown Lions Tom Jones and Larry Harper erect a sign in
preparation for the Howard County 4- H Fair, which is sponsored by
the Lions Club. Many hours are spent by Lions members in the
weeks prior to the fair as well as the week of the fair in grounds
and facilities preparation and in planning and implementing a wide
variety of activities. The 2000 fair dates are July 24- 29.

Eastern to ' a
Welcome New
Girls BB Coach
Sabr'ina Slone
Sabrina Slone was hired July 18 as a
teacher of emotionally handicapped at
Eastern Jr/ Sr. High School and as head
grls basketball coach. She fills the
coaching vacancy left by Don Walker,
who resigned last spring.
% Slone is a graduate of Alexandria-
Monroe High School with an Academic
Honors diploma. She received a
Bachelor of Science in Business with a
Communications minor from Wake
Forest University , and a Masters in
Secondary Education from Ball State
University.
Since 1997 she has taught business
education at Norwell High School in
Ossian, Indiana. At Norwell she was
also Junior Varsity Basketball Coach.
Prior to that, she was Assistant Varsity
Basketball Coach at her Alma mater in
$ Alexandria,
Her playing career includes AAU All-
State ( 1985- 89) and All- American
( 1 987). She was Alexandria- Monroe
High School's first Indiana All- star
( 1989). At Wake Forest she was a 4
year starter on the Women's Basketball
team.
Slone says she plans to build on the
existing talent and has high
expectations for the years to come.

New School
Board. Members
Installed -
The three new members of the board
of Eastem Howard School Corporation
were installed by corporation treasurer,
Verna Rush, on July 7,2000. Melinda
Young, Mark Lantz, and Ann
Renbarger were selected in the election
of May 2. Tliey all expressed
excitement about taking their new
positionaand were welcomed by current
board members Bill Heck and Larry
Hinesley, and by Superintendent Dr.
Lindan B. Hill.
Bill Heck was elected president of the
board for the 2000- 2001 term. Heck
was Board President in a prior year.
Melinda Young was elected Vice-
President and Mark Lantz, Secretary.
Mrs. Rush was retained as Treasurer.
This is a position she has held for 22
years. Dana Brovont was named Extra-
Curricular Treasurer for the Elementary,
and Kim Davis Extra- Curricular
Treasurer for the Jr/ Sr High.
Appointment of the Corporation
attorney was tabled until the board has
an opportunity to meet the proposed
person. The second and fourth
Tuesdays at 7: 30 p. m. was established
for regular meetings of the board.
Permit Required
for Fences
If Greentown residents want to put up
a new fence on property zoned R 1, they
are required to obtain a building permit.
This is according to a new ordinance
passed by the Town Council on July 1 1.
The cost of the permit is $ 1 5 . OO and can
be obtained from the Executive
Secretary of the Planning Committee,
presently Keith Rush. The reason for
the ordinance is to allow the marshal an
opportunity to be assured that the fence
is to be erected in the cbrrect location, in
an effort to prevent conflict resulting
from a wrong location.
NOTICE
The PTO meeting scheduled for July
25 has been changed to August 9,6: 30
p. m., in the new elementary cafeteria. It
will be a special meeting to discuss
playground equipment.
