Income Survey to be
Conducted
During the week from May 10- 1 7 an
income survey will be taken of some
households in Greentown. The
information is being gathered as part of
a grant application to the Department
of Commerce for funds to use in the
planned Water Project of the town.
Not all homes will be contacted. The
name of the surveyor is Jeff Hornsby.
Eastern Schools
Reduce
Teaching
Positions
to Compensate for
Financial Losses
After outlining several factors of the
school financial picture, Dr. Stephen C.
Healy recommended a reduction- in-force
of three . teaching positions.
These will be from non- renewal of
semi- permanent and non- permanent
position's of Marilyn Aleman, Thomas
Martin, and Greg Hazelwood. Three
additional positions will be reduced due
to retirements and resignations.
To emphasize the seriousness of the
situation, Dr. Healy reported that the
corporation is anticipating $ 500,000 in
losses for this year. These losses will be
reduced through reduction- in- force and
attrition. To fail to reduce expenditures
could lead to a use of all reserve funds,
and eventual state control of the
corporation.
Factors which have led to the deficit
are:
1. A reduction in funds provided from
the state; 2. Increased medical insurance
costs ( 68% in the last two years); 3.
Increased property insurance costs
( 45% trickle down from the Sept. 11
payments); 4. Eastern Howard School
Corporation's contributions to the State
Teachers Retirement Fund ( increased
beginning 1995 and increased again in
2001); 5. The corporation's own
retirement plan ( unfunded liability);
6. Decreasing enrollment ( down 100
students from five years ago).
Dr. Healy also explained that
teachers' salaries come from the
General Fund, and other funds such as
Transportation and Capital Projects
cannot be used for classroom salaries.
The Board approved the request.
