Council Begins New Year v
All members of the Greentown
Town Council and the Clerk- Treasurer
were sworn in at the first meeting of
the new term, January 6,2004. James
Harris was re- elected President of the
Council and Craig Trott Vice-president.
Other members of the
Council are Todd Everling, Joyce
Higginbottom, and Mary Lindgren.
Barbara Middleton is Clerk- Treasurer.
The Council voted to rehire the firm
of King, McCann & Scott as town
attorney and Foresight Engineering as
town engineer. They also voted to
rehire all town employees. They are
Kevin Moss, Water; Bill Ross,
Wastewater; Steve Rule, Laborer-
WWTP; Gene Miller, Laborer;
Deborah Bessler; Utility Office; Mary
Lou McCalment, Asst. Utilities; Jeff
Bennett, Marshal; John Horton, lst
Deputy; Rick Cranor, 2” d Deputy.
Council members were appointed to
committees: Water, Trott and Everling;
Benefits, Higginbottom and Lindgren;
Wastewater, Trott and Everling;
Refuse Contract, Lindgren and
Higginbottom; Police, Everling and
Lindgren; Street, Trott and
Higginbottom.
Plan Commission members are: Gary
Lacy, Don Downs, Garry Hill, Dan
Adams, Craig Trott, Joyce
Elections for
School Board
to Be Mav 4 J
Election for three of the five seats on
the Eastern Howard School Board will
be held May 4. The seats subject to
election are for representatives from
each of the school district townships,
Liberty, Jackson, and Union. Those
elected will take office in July for a
four year term.
Steps which need to be taken to be
placed on the ballot are as follows:
1. Acquire a petition from the County
Clerk’s office ( in Howard County
courthouse).
2. Get ten signatures from people
eligible to vote from your township.
3. File the application with the County
Clerk by noon February 20.
Presently holding these seats are
Melinda Young, Ann Renbarger, and
Mark Lantz. As of January 29, Mrs.
Young had filed for re- election.
Higginbottom, and Mary Lindgren.
Board of Zoning Appeals members
are: Mike Sheridan, Gany Hill, Don
Downs, Lyle Hainlen, and Ron
George. Plan Commission
Administrator is Gany Hill. Boat Club
members are: Kevin Moss, Jeff
Lanning, Merrill Shrock, Paul Crow,
and Dave Catt. Representative to
Howard County Emergency
Management is James Harris. Harris is
also representative to the Glass
Museum. Craig Trott and Emmett
Herr on the Greentown Library Board
as appointments from the Council.
Joyce Higginbottom is appointed to
Howard County Solid Waste
Management District.
The Council heard the 2003 report
from the Greentown Police
Department. It showed a total of 5,6 14
hours worked, 82 traffic arrests, 168
traffic warnings, 29 ordinance
violations, 3 O. W. I. arrests, 106 cases
investigated, 55 cases cleared, 55 cases
suspended, 2 cases to Howard County
Sheriffs Department, 32 criminal
arrests, 1,156 calls for service, 52
accidents investigated, 133 agency
assists, and 11 court appearances.
The Plan Commission Administrator
gave his year- end report showing total
value of improvements as
$ 2,326,450.00. Fees collected totaled
$ 890.00. Permits were for new
structures, additions, demolitions,
fences, decks, storage buildings,
swimming pools, and signs.
Garry Hill, 1021 Eastcrest Drive,
spoke to the Council about the
continuing problem of sewer back- up
at his residence. He said it happened
two times in the past two weeks. His
sump pumps prevented flooding but he
still had the smell of sewage. He has
had $ 3,000.00 in expense on the
problem and has been cancelled twice
by homeowners insurance companies.
He said he believes the long term plan
of the town will take care of the
problem, but he is asking for a short-term
remedy. President Harris asked
the town engineer to meet at the Hill
residence and study the problem.
It was reported that the town has
received provisional approval for
$ 200,000.00 for the addition of
sidewalks on three blocks of East
Grant Street.
The Council voted to purchase a
John Deere 2004 backhoe at the price
of $ 64,400.00
New Restaurant Opens
Greentown’s first Chinese restaurant opened thelast week of January
at 102 E. Main St., the former location of The Pizza Place. It offers a
large menu of food to take out. Some seating is available for those who
prefer to eat in. It is open seven days a week. Hours are Sunday
through Thursday 10: 30 a. m. - 1O: OO p. m. and Friday and Saturday from
10: 30 a. m. to 10: 30 p. m.

Space Connection I
How many Eastern graduates can
you name who have been involved in
the space program? When the
Greentown Historical Society presents
an exhibit they are presently working
on, not only will visitors be able to
name them, but be able to appreciate
their unique contributions to the
program.
Following are brief sketches of each:
Webb Marner, EHS Class of 1955,
works at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in
Pasadena, California. He was involved
in testing the Mars Exploration Rover
spacecraft. The two rovers presently
on Mars have been in the news
recently.
Jim Long, EHS Class of 1956, wrote
computer programs which were used
to control the flight of spacecraft. He
was involved in many manned
missions. After 40 years with NASA,
he retired in 2000.
Stephen Hall, EHS Class of 1963,
worked on a variety of projects
including Lunar Roving Vehicle,
Skylab, Space Shuttle, Hubble Space
Telescope, Space lab, and International
Space Station. He developed a way to
take a shower in space and designed a
way to take care of trash on Skylab.
Dean Schaaf, EHS Class of 1964,
made the transition to NASA after a
career in the Navy. His work involves
End of Mission Operations ( what
happens after a landing). He
personally knows many of the
astronauts, as he debriefs them after
flights.
Tammy Alexander is not an Eastern
graduate, but is “ close to home” as she
married Reuben ( Hochstedler)
Alexander, son of Robert and Rachael
Hochstedler. As a NASA employee,
she works with contractors such as
Boeing and Lockheed.
