~~ Train Derails in Greentown
A normal work day Thursday,
August 12, at Greentown Equipment,
532 E. Uncle Tom St., Greentown, was
interrupted about 2: OO p. m. by the
sounds of train cars leaving the tracks
and the bending and breaking of metal.
The event resulted in seven rail cars
leaving the tracks immediately to the
north ofthe building. Although a near-miss,
the building was not damaged.
Karl Brovont was working in the north
part ofthe building and heard the train,
then the sound of it stopping. He
looked up through a window and saw
a car start to move toward the building.
He moved in the other direction but
saw that the car had stopped moving so
halted his exit.
Two of the derailed cars contained
nitrogen fertilizer solution. Chris
McGuire of Central Railroad stated
that there were no explosives, no
fumes, and no leakage. The contents
were transferred to trucks belonging to
Emy’s Fertilizer of Walton. The State
Police report showed that there werl
no hazardous materials involved

Railroad, were Indiana State Police

Although no official report fron
Central Railroad has been available, i
appears that something was dragginl
under a car, and when that item hit thc
switch on the north side of Greentowr
Equipment, the cars were thrown of
the track. Evidence of somethine
dragging could be seen for about twc
miles to the east. The ties wen
damaged between the rails in i
continuous line, described by Dar
Adams, employee of Greentowr
Equipment, as a “ furrow”.

With cable, chains, and counter wights, the wheels and cars were righted
and set on firm tracks.
