Title
Man operating a planer
Description
Like the milling machine , planers--which had long been employed in metal and woodworking--gradually came to occupy a central place in the stoneworker's tool kit . In this example , a stoneworker draws the machine across the stone by means of a manually operated rotor wheel , creating the smooth , neatly drawn ridges . From this spot in the workflow (the planer) , the stone will go to the hand cutter , who will smooth out any rough places . It may go outside . There were machine shops at the mill . Mechanics would have to grease the machines almost every morning . Mechanics had their own union separate from the cutters and others .
