Description
The Erie Stone company was organized February 27 , 1906 with offices at Vert , Ohio , and operations were started one and one-half miles east of the Huntington county courthouse on the Anthony A. Weber farm . In 1912 the offices were moved to Toledo , which is their present location . The first directors were I.F . France , N.R . France , W.G . France , C.L . Ireland , and C.W . McKee . Mr . McKee was general manager and Fred Weber was plant superintendent . Stone was quarried by hand at that time and only two sizes were made , railroad ballast and crusher run . A few years later another plant was started at Bluffton and is still in operation . As time went on large steam shovels and industrial railroad equipment were installed along with more and larger mill and crusher machinery . Operations at this site were discontinued in 1934 and the hole allowed to fill with water , which is now known as Lake Clare . In 1935 the company moved to an new location a short distance east of the old quarry in an abandoned quarry formerly operated by Peter Martin who manufactured burnt lime . The quarry is still in operation . The company now has a modern crushed stone plant with up to-date machinery , and have approximately 30 employees . They carry complete insurance and hospital benefit plan , have an industrial nurse and paid vacations , are active in safety first network , give quarterly dinners , and yearly awards to all employees working a full year without a lost time accident . The present board of directors consists of G.A . France , president and treasurer ; Nat R . France , vice president ; C.F . Martig , secretary and assist treasurer ; R.L . Wentz , and R.H . Rogers . The plant manager at the present time is A.C . Nickelsen who came here in 1940 , and the office manager is J.T . Curran who came to this city in 1920 .
